Awareness of Family Medicine Among Medical Students



Abstract
As modern medical science has developed, medical science gradually gets to specialized and subdivided. As a result, intern and resident doctoral courses concentrated upon education of medical specialities. Threfore, the family medicine has become
a
branch of medical science that has characterized with continuous, comprehensive and first contact care. This survey was to investigate the knowledge and attitude of family medicine and selection of specialities among medical students. The
questionnaire
was distributed to medical students in Schol of Medicine, Keimyung University, among whom 323 responded, from September 3 to October 3, 1991. The results were analyzed after dividing into two groups, those choosing family medicine and those
choosing a
medical speciality other than family medicine. 53.4 percent of the students has already recognized of family medicine, most of the students thought that family that family medicine was necessary in Korea. The main reason not choosing it was their
unawareness of it. There is no significant difference between the student group choosing family medicine and the student choosing a medical speciality other than family medicine. This study demonstrated that medical students still have a scanty
knowledge and attitude of family medicine and also there were no significnat differeces between the group selecting family medicine and the group selecting other family medicine as a speciality. Therfore, more emphasis an education and
davertisement of
family medicine needed.
